Self Portraits and Portraits Part 1

1. Move your subject out of comfort zone
2. Introduce a prop
3. Experiment with subject expressions

Environmental Portraits:

I really liked these 2 photos because in both of the photos it captures the action that is happening as well as some of the background.

Photography Self Portraits:
I really liked this photo because it looks very different than another ordinary photo. The way the photographer made this photo come together looks amazing! I chose this photo because of the uniqueness.

I liked this photo because of the creativity of the subject. When I first glanced at the photo I didn't realize  the girl was holding another picture to cover her face. I chose this photo because of the creativity captured.

Casual Portraits:

I liked this photo because of the emotion in this photo. You can tell the bond between the mother and son is strong. I chose this photo because its a cute picture to look at.
I liked this photo because of the emotion as well. The bride is over joyed and the photo captured her happiness. I chose this photo because of the happiness.

For my portrait assignment I will shoot my boyfriend or best friends for the portrait part of the project and for the self-portrait part I will obviously shoot myself. I will shoot either at my house or theirs either outside or inside, depending on how I want the photos to look. I will have my subject use props and capture some sort of emotion to make my photos stand out. My friends and I are really comfortable with each other so I shouldn't have a problem with this project.

1. What are the advantages of shoot at a higher ISO at a sporting event like basketball or a night football game?
If you shoot an image on high ISO inside it can make the image freeze also when there is not enough light to capture the image then it is good to put it on high ISO.  When you shoot a sporting event it is best to use high ISO.

2. What suggestions did the author make about using a low ISO?
When there is plenty of light then it is good to use low ISO.

3. What suggestions did the author make about using a high ISO?

My 3 babies, Mimi, Timmy, and Joey, usually ALL like to pose for photos but I just don't know what Joey was thinking. I told them all to stay still before I took the picture but Joey wanted to be different in this photo. This just shows how different he is from the rest of the clan.

Great Black and White Photographers Part 3:

When I first saw Sebastiao Salgado's photo's the one thing that caught my eye was the emotion he captured in each one of his photos. I chose his photos because in each photo that I saw I felt some sort of emotion.

Photo 1:
I see the penguins waiting to slide down the ice burg into the freezing water. The penguins are most likely jumping in the water to find food. The penguins formed a line to wait their turn to slide down into the water.
I smell the fresh cool air with a sense of salt water. The freezing air has a icy smell as it is brushing against my face. As the waves splash I smell the salt water.
I hear the splashing of the waves. As each penguin slides into the water I hear a giant splash against the ice berg. I hear  the sliding of the penguins on their stomach.
I taste the ice cold air in my mouth. As the air whistling in the air I get a taste of the air when I open my mouth.
I feel very cold but at the same time happy. I get to witness penguins in penguins in their own habitat and watch them as they slide on their stomach's.

Photo 2:
I see group of people walking in a desert wrapped in a blanket. I see dirt blowing in the background
almost as if it were a sand storm. I see the people's face expression as if they were asking for help.
I smell the dirt blowing all in the air. I smell the wilderness and the open fields.
I hear the whistling of the wind in the air. I hear footsteps of the people walking.
I taste the dirty taste of dirt. Every time I open my mouth I get a taste of dirt.
I feel sorrow for the people walking. They are in a desert and barefoot walking. I feel them calling out for help to me.

I think Sebastiao Salgado is a wonderful photographer. I would make a power point to preset his history about him and his work he has accomplished, including all of his amazing photos.

Mural Project Preview

1. We could do the theme of different culture. Each person at our school has their own unique culture. I think it would be interesting to see this in a series of pictures.

2. I think we should use phones because if we go off campus and see a unique photo that would fit the theme we could just take the photo with our phone.

3. I would like to put the murals up in the front of the school or all over the courtyard so everyone on campus could see.

Abandoned Theme Parks

The Takakanonuma Greenland in Hobara, Japan caught my eye out of all the abandoned amusements parks. If I had the opportunity to takes pictures I would not hesitate. I found the amusement park interesting because it was not open for too long. Rumors said it was haunted and that is why it shut down but others say the par just was not doing good in business. I would like to explore the park and see if it was really was haunted and I would find out by capturing some pictures.

Interesting Places:
-Haunted Place
-Asylum
-Abandoned Buildings
-Castle
-Cave

John Gray captures photos of haunted places.
In my opinions it would be interesting to take pictures of a haunted place because I could capture some very neat and rare things. Though it would be very scary and risky, I'm fascinated by haunted areas because you get a view of a different part of the world.

If i=I could visit a haunted area to take ictures

Africa

In the article, Awaiting Animals, I saw pictures of the wildlife of Africa. Also, I read about how each year more and more animals are being put in danger because of us. Nick  Brandt is a photographer who captured these wonderful images.

This is one of my favorite pictures of Nick Brandt's photography because I feel like it shows love that the lions have love for each other. Also, the rule of simplicity applies to this photo because the photo only captures the subject of the photo and not much background.

Nick Brandt uses a Pentax 67ll with only two fixed lenses because he believes capturing the animals up close captures there personality and inner spirit.
Brandt captures photos f the animals to simply show them that they are in the state of being before they no longer exist.
Brandt hopes that the animals will no longer be in danger anymore.

Brandt states "There is something profoundly iconic, mythological even, about the animals of East and southern Africa. There is also something deeply, emotionally stirring and affecting about the plains of Africa..." about Africa.

Peer Reflextion

http://joshsphotojournalismblog.blogspot.com/

He followed the rule of simplicity well because he focused on the main subject.

The rule Josh did not follow too well was lines. There were no lines in the photo that led to any subject.

Overall Josh did a good job on focusing on all of his pictures. They came out looking great !

He can improve on the rule of lines

Academic Shoot Reflextion

1. I encountered a lot of challenges throughout this photo shoot. One of the biggest challenges was following all the rules correctly. I found a lot of good pictures to take but I had to constantly remind myself that it had to follow one of the rules.

2. .I found myself thinking about focusing the most. Every time I would capture a picture I would think to myslef "is this focused enough?" or "do I need to zoom in or out more?"

3. Now that I know I know the rules better I would make sure I focused on capturing each rule in each photo.

4. I would focus the same way because I feel like each photo I too were overall focused well.

5. The easiest rule to achieve would be simplicity.

6. The hardest rule to capture would be rule of thirds.

7. I'm still not clear on what the rule of thirds is. In order to understand I can look it up and see examples.

Balance

I feel like I did follow the rule of balance somewhat because the colors balance with each other and so does the enviroment. The subject of this photo is the teacher helping the students and it is clear to others what the subject is.

Rule of Thirds

I feel like I followed the rule of thirds somewhat. There are certain aspects in this photo that I feel followed the rule such as the subject of the photo is in the lower right corner. The subject of this photo is the students paying attention the the teacher. It's obvious to other people what the subject is. Something I would of done differently in this photo is following the rule more accurately and make sure I had the rule of thirds in my photo before I captured it.

Framing

In my opinion I feel that I did not follow the rule of framing too well. The subject of the photo is the students working. If people were to see my photo they would easily know what the subject was. Something different I would do to make this photo better is find a way to frame this photo rather than just taking another normal photo.

Lines

In my opinion I feel like I followed the rule of lines because the lines lead to the students.  The subject of this photo is the students working at the table and if people were to see my photo I think they would know what the subject was. Though I feel like I followed the rule, something I would of done differently is make the lines more obvious,

Simplicity

I feel that i followed the rule of simplicity quite well because the photo is clear and focuses on the subject. The subject of this photo is the student working. If people were to see this photo the subject would be obvious.

Unusual & Interesting Photos

Part 1:
I think Christian Ruhm did amazing on his pictures. It's a really creative idea.
I think he took a photo of a building then photo shopped them.
I think the Capital Building in Austin would be a good photo to take.

Action and Emotion

In this photo you get a little bit of action and a bit of emotion. The water and bubble exploding in the air show the action. The girls reaction to the water explosion shows their emotion. You can tell that they're having fun and think the experiment is awesome!

The Story

I chose this photo as the best story because when I saw this photo I was touched. It just shows that there are still people out there willing to help those in need. I bet those people were starving before they were fed. This photo symbolizes kindness.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

A). People were Photoshopping images in the Middle East to the point where it was unacceptable. A photographer, Adnan Hajj, manipulated at least 2 photos during the Lebanon War. Haj was not the only photographer to do this. Around the same time other photographers were manipulating photos as well.

B). This type of photo editing  is unacceptable because it's going on and adding and/or deleting people or objects in the photo that should not be added/deleted. It's okay to edit the photo to make it look better but deleting people out of a photo that should be in there is just unacceptable.

In my opinion this is the most unethical photo because George Bush never debated against Saddam Hussein, thereforeGeorge should of never been photo shopped into the photo. It's just not right to do that to somone.

In my opinion this photo is the least unethical because you can't even tell that the pyramids are put closer together. I would of never known if i never read it.

Post Shoot Reflection

1) Some challenges I encountered while taking photos for my prompts was finding that one perfect thing that went with each prompt. Also I had trouble angling the photo.

2) I really thought about focusing it. I didn't want to zoom in too much but I didn't want the picture to look like it was far away. I focused it the way I thought it looked good.

3) Now that I know the basic rules of photography I would of framed my pictures better and also avoid mergers. Some of the pictures I took have mergers and it just doesn't look good.

4) A thing I would do the same is focus it the way I did.

5) Looking back at my photos I took I did not achieve any of the rules of composition. Now that I know these rules I can improve my photos.

6) I would like to shoot different prompts because I don't like doing the same thing over again I like to do new things.

http://madisonsphotojournalismblog.blogspot.com/2013/09/first-free-shoot.html

I really like how this student displayed all the prompts in their pictures. It's really easy to see each prompt in each photo. I also love the picture of metal she took.

One thing this student could improve on is zooming out jus a little bit. Get some more background to help incorporate the photo.

Avoiding Mergers

In this photo the center of attention is the lady covered in dust. There is nothing in the photo to interfere with her. Also the background is plain and simple making her the center of interest.

Rule of Thirds

In my opinion this photo displays an example of The Rule of Thirds because the men on the ladder are on the lower right but it also shows the background. The way the men are positioned in the photo and the background are make the photo look really nice.

Simplicity

This photo is a good example of simplicity because it focuses on the main idea of the photo. It's very clear and the blue sky against the towers just helps focus on the towers.

Balance

I feel like this photo is a good example of balance because the black and white colors make it look well-balanced. It helps focus on the main subject of the photo, the man.

Framing

This photo is a good example of framing because the photo isn't just another snapshot. It focuses on the center of interest but also has other objects in the foreground. This photo has meaning!

Lines

In this photo the lines are going down and so is the man. The lines are repetitive and helps focus on the main idea of the picture, which is the man falling.

National Geographic

In my opinion this photo is beautiful. I love the colors and how they come together  in the storm . The clouds look extraordinary, something you don't see everyday.
If I could take any photo in the world I would take one of the Northern lights in Alaska because I've always wanted to see them. I think they're so beautiful.

Touching People

1. What do you think about this project and photo essay?
I think this is a unique project. It's different from any other photography that I've seen.

2. What would you do if someone approached you with a camera and asked you to participate in a photo shoot and then asked you to touch a stranger?
Honestly, I think it would be a little creepy at first since I wouldn't know the person but once I knew what was happening I would love to participate in it.

3. Think of an unusual photo shoot similar to this one that you think would be fun to go and shoot.
An unusual photo would be a homeless person with a very rich person.

4. Finally, tell me what you thought of the photography, are the photos good? Do you like looking at them?
I liked the photos i thought they were unusual but nice to see people coming together in a way. I liked looking at them and would look at more.

Top 40 Photos

 projects.ajc.com / Via polichicksonline.com
I chose this photo because it touched me to see the lady finally reunited after 7 months. I don't think any special camera settings were used. In my opinion this photo made the top 40 because its very touching.

I chose this photo because its nice to see the earth from  space. I think it looks really nice. I really liked how the photo was zoomed because you ca see the earth perfectly as well as a little portion of the moon. I think this photo made it in the top 40 because its nice to see the earth from space since not everyone gets to see that view.

Asianewsphoto / Reuters
I really liked this photo because it just shows how people still have a heart out there. The monk didn't have to pray over the  dead man but he did out of the kindness of his heart. In the photo you can tell that the photo mainly centers the monk and the man. I think this photo made the to 40 because it just shows kindness from others.

Great Black and White Photographers, PART 2

Sebastiao Salgado was born on February 8, 1944 in AimorĂ©s, Brazil. Before he started his career as a photojournalist he studied economics. He would travel a lot and on his trips and got inspired by the people he photographed. He then quit his finance job and continued traveling and photographing the world. His photographs highlight global issues relating to nature, workers, and the human conditions. Though he knows his photos won't change what goes on in the world he can at least bring awareness.
Salgado became very popular and gained wide recognition around the world when he captured the  picture of John Hinckley Jr's attempt to to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981. He has also wrote many books which include: Sahel: Man in Distress, Migrations and The Children.  He now lives in Paris, France and continues to take pictures around the world. Also he was named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and has been awarded Honorary Doctorates from a number of universities.
